Translation by Tarlochan Singh Khalsa, Ph.D.

  ( Continued from Sep 1999 Issue )

Verses 16-19

The selected ones

The real followers are who follow and copy the teachings of the guru and heed and comply with the instructions of the guru. Otherwise, the relationship of a guru and a Sikh does not exist. The spiritual rank that listens to the message of the guru—verses 7-11, and practices a name way of life—verses 12-15, is described below:

· They are the chosen ones and spiritual chiefs affirmed.

· They get honor in Thy divine court.

· The chosen ones look radiant in the court of the rulers.

· They impartially concentrate on Thy name.

· One may try to depict and justify the nature of God.

· There is no end to estimate the doings of God.

· The bull12 is divinity- son of kindness sustains the planet.

· The law of patience holds the planet in outer space.

· One, who realizes this reality, becomes truthful.

· What a huge load of planet is on the bull!

· There are more and more planets beyond this planet.

· What is the support to the bull holding the last planet?

· The beings are of diverse kinds, ranks, color and names.

· They are all written with nonstop pen.

· Who knows to print this ledger—without God?

· Just imagine what a bulky writing it would be?

· God is limitless might and good looking.

· Who can guess Thy total gifts?

· Thy produced creation with a command.

· Thus hundreds of thousands rivers of life began flowing.

· Naanak doesn’t have ability to explain Thy nature.

· Naanak doesn’t truly stand for one time offering.

· Whatever is Thy preference is favorable to him.

· Formless is permanent.16

The selected followers are those who listened, followed a name way of life and impartially concentrated on Thy name. After their physical death, they get honor in the courthouse divine. The law of patience is holding the planet in the outer space, and not any imaginary bull mentioned in Hindu mythology. That bull is divinity—son of kindness.

The spiritual balance is maintained in the universe because countless meditate on Thy name, do worship, love humanity, help the needy, recite religious scriptures, practice yoga, and are holy people.

· Countless are in meditation.

· Countless humanity love to diverse people.

· Countless are busy in worship.

· Countless are engaged in repentance and aid.

· Countless are reciting the Holy Scriptures and Vedas.

· Countless are yoga practitioners and remain dispirited.

· Countless review Thy wisdom and virtues.

· Countless are the holy people.

· Countless contribute in charity.

· Countless are fearless warriors.

· Countless observe continuous respectful silence.17

In this world there are both good and evil people. There is no scarcity of stupid, corrupt rulers, butchers, sinners, liars, dung feasters, slanders, etc. In the following verse Guru Naanak describes the kinds and the abundance of evil people.

· Countless are extremely stupid.

· Countless are corrupt and do embezzlement.

· Countless rule by repression.

· Countless are responsible for repression.

· Countless sinners sin and leave the world.

· Countless liars engage in falsifying.

· Countless dull occupy in dung feasting.

· Countless slanders are responsible for their offense.18

Then Guru Naanak specifies the limitlessness of Thy creation. There are countless habitats with life that are not approachable. Even the word ‘countless’ is inadequate and improper to describe Thy nature. At the same time, words are not the medium to call and glorify God. By words appear in writing, speech, and language. By words we sing and glorify God, comes spiritual wisdom and know Thy virtues. The destiny is also informed by words. All except God are under the jurisdiction of karma. God ordains whatever we receive in life. Creator materialized the universe from Thy name. Thy name is the source, and present in all creation.

· Countless are the names and habitats of Thy creation.

· Countless are the planets with life unapproachable.

· Countless is not an adequate word to describe nature.

· To say countless is an improper use of this word.

· However, the words are a medium to call Thy name.

· By words we glorify the God.

· By words comes spiritual wisdom.

· By words we sing Thy glory.

· By words we come to know Thy virtues.

· By words which appear writing, speech and language.

· By words the destiny is informed.

· God alone is beyond karma.

· As God ordains, so do we acquire?

· The entire creation was materialized from Thy name.

· No spot is without the presence of Thy name.19

Verses 20-27

The importance of Thy Name

Guru Naanak illustrates with examples that as the dirty body and clothes are washed with water and soap respectively to get them clean, so does meditating on Thy name turn the sinned common sense scarlet.

· The dusty feet and body are cleaned with water.

· The soap washes the clothes stained with urine.

· So, Thy name purifies the sinned common sense.

· Thy name turns the soiled common sense scarlet.

· The virtue and the vice are not only the tags.

· All karma imprints our mind to the courthouse divine.

· Whatever we sow so shall we reap.

· Thus, under Thy command we transmigrate. 20

Fruitless Efforts

Many of the followers perform the various rituals without understanding the message of the guru. They waste their time and effort. The succeeding four rituals provide only a trace of credit to the disciple:

1. The holy baths.

2. The services done at the holy places.

3. The leniency.

4. The contributions toward charity.

· Guru Naanak disclosed a wonderful timesaving truth about the holy bath. This reality is for those who give ear and obey the guru, and meditate on Thy Name in love and devotion. They get sweeping holy bath internal.

· All the virtues are God given.

· Without virtues none can listen and worship Thy name.

· God is everlasting.

· God is present in illusion too.

· God is the holy scripture.

· God is the creator of the Burma—the god of creation.

· God is permanent, pretty, and ever pleasing.

Creation of the Universe

Science puts forward different findings about the origin of the universe. Are they true, or close to reality? Who was a party at

that time? Are all these approximations, or true descriptions? Let’s see how Guru Nanak answers this type of inquiries.

· What was the moment—when Thy created the matter?

· What was the time—when Thy created the matter?

· What was the weekday—when Thy created the matter?

· What was the lunar day—when Thy created the matter?

· What was the month—when Thy created the matter?

· What was the season—when Thy created the matter?

· The Hindu Pundits could not discover this reality.

· Otherwise they could have composed a Puraan13.

· The Hindu Yogi didn’t comprehend about the origin.

· Likewise, the Muslim Kazis14 did not know the beginning.

· Contrarily, they would have admitted in the Koran.

· The Creator knows solely, when the matter was created.

· What way can I speak of and glorify God?

· How can one explain away and interpret God?

· Everyone speaks about God, and proves wiser.

· Celebrity is God, and great Thy justice.

· God authorizes every fulfillment.

· Self-proclaimed does not get respect in Thy court.21

· There are hundreds and thousands nether worlds.

· Equal numbers of worlds are under nether worlds.

· Countless higher galaxies exist.

· The Vedas also exhausted to find Thy limit.

· The Christians and Moslems believe in 18,000 worlds and one collective God.

· The numbers to justify Thy nature is not workable.

· Because the numbers turn inadequate.

· God only entirely knows, how massive is Thyself.22

· One can’t conceive Thy vastness by glorifying God.

· It is like the streams and the rivers losing their identity into the ocean.

· The great rulers may posses mountains of material wealth and properties—they don’t equalize an insect—who does not ignore Thy name any time.23

Vastness of the Creator

· There is no end to Thy glory.

· There is no end that glorifies God.

· There is no limit to Thy creation.

· There is no limit of Thy favors.

· There is no end to witness and listen to Thy virtues.

· There is no limit to form an opinion of what is in Thy wish.

· There is no end to Thy natural form.

· There is no end to Thy boundaries.

· Many are severely anxious to locate Thy limits.

· Nevertheless, it is not possible to uncover Thy limits.

· No one can know Thy limit.

· More we say Thy vastness; the more appears endless.

· Highest is God; superlative is Thy domicile.

· Over and above is Thy name.

· No one is of Thy quality to know Thy supreme.

· How big is Thy, knows completely Thyself?

· Every blessing is realized by Thy generous grace.24
