There is one and only God, with authentic name,

Creator in spirit,

without fear, without hate,

beyond term,

beyond transmigration, self-existent,

and realized with the pleasure of the guru.

hai bhee sach  hY BI scu

Naanak hosee bhee sach.1 nwnk hosI BI scu]1]Thy existed in the primal beginning, and when the time commenced. Likewise, Thy is present in this age, O Naanak, and will dwell in future as well.1

Sochai soch na hovee socY soic n hoveI

jai sochee lakh vaar. jy socI lK vwr]

Simply cleansing the body, even hundreds of thousands times, the purity of the mind is not possible to achieve.

 

Chupai chup na hovee cupyY cup n hoveI

jai laai raha liv taar. jy lwie rhw ilv qwr]

By staying silent and absorbed inside, in a fixed body posture, peace of mind is not conceivable.

 

Bhukhia bhukh na utree BuiKAw BuK n auqrI

jai banna purian bhaar. jy bMnw purIAw Bwr]

Contentment from material hunger is not feasible, despite securing loads of riches of all the worlds.

 

Sahas sianhpa lakh hohai shs isAwxpw lK hoih

ta ik na chalai naal. q iek n clY nwil]

Even possessing these types of hundreds of thousands of worldly wisdom tricks, do not go along to the next world.

 

Kiv sachiara hoeeai, ikv sicAwrw hoeIAY

kiv koorai tutai paal. ikv kUVY qutY pwil]

Thereupon, what is the practice to cultivate truth—and tear away the blind of untruth.

 

Hukam rajaaee chalanha hukim rjweI clxw

Naanak likhia naal.1 nwnk iliKAw nwil]1]

To recognize Thy command is the acknowledged method since beginning, O Naanak.1

Hukamee hovan aakaar hukmI hovin Awkwr

hukam na kahia jaaee. hukmu n kihAw jweI ]

All the creation is by Thy command; still this command is beyond description.

 

Hukamee hovan jee hukmI hovin jIA

hukam milai vadiaaee. hukim imlY vifAweI ]

By Thy command, the life conceives, and gets glory.

 

Hukamee uttam neech hukmI auqmu nIcu

hukam likh  hukim iliK

dukh sukh paaeeaih. duK suK pweIAih ]

By Thy command, some are admirable; others evil. By Thy command—inscribed, pain and pleasure perceived.

 

Ikna hukamee bakhsees ieknw hukmI bKsIs

ik hukmee ieik hukmI

sada bhavaaeeaih. sdw BvweIAih]

By Thy command some get concession of salvation; others transmigrate forever.

 

Hukamai ander sabh ko hukmY AMdir sBu ko

baahar hukam na koai. bwhir hukm n koie]

Everyone is subject to Thy command; no one is beyond Thy jurisdiction.

 

Naanak hukmai jai bujhai nwnk hukmY jy buJY

ta haumai kahai na koai.2 q haumY khY n koie]2]

O Naanak, who understands Thy command, does not speak of individual identity.2

Gaavai ko taanh gwvY ko qwxu

hovai kisai taanh. hovY iksY qwxu]

Gaavai ko daat gwvY ko dwiq

jaanhai neesaanh. jwxY nIswxu]

Some sing Thy might, to the extent of their strength.

Some sing Thy gifts, because they consider it imprints of Thy grace.

 

Gaavai ko gunh gwvY ko gux

vadiaian chaar. vifAweIAw cwr]

Gaavai ko vidia  gwvY ko ividAw

vikham vichaar. ivKmu vIcwru]

Some sing Thy beautiful virtues and glory. Some sing Thy’s hard spiritual wisdom on the strength of their knowledge.

 

Gaavai ko saaj gwvY ko swij

karai tan khaih. kry qnu Kyh]

Gaavai ko jee lai phir daih. gwvY ko jIA lY iPir dyh]

Some sing Thy fashions the body; and reduce to dust. Some sing Thy takes life away and then reinstates it into other bodies.

 

Gaavai ko jaapai gwvY ko jwpY

disai door. idsY dUir]

Gaavai ko vaikhai  gwvY ko vyKY

haadra hadoor. hwdrw hdUir]

Some sing Thy seems far away. Some sing Thy watches everybody, and everywhere.

 

Kathana Kathee kQnw kQI

na avai tot. n AwvY qoit]

Kath kath kathee  kiQ kiQ kQI

kotee kot kot. kotI koit koit]

There is no shortage of giving Thy discourses. Millions of millions tried to explain away; the Lord’s decree is endless.

 

Šainda dai laindai dydw dy lYdy

thak paahai. Qik pwih]

Juga jugantar jugw jugMqir

khahee khahai. KwhI Kwih]

The Giver keeps on giving gifts, but the receivers get fatigued. In all the ages they make use of these gifts.

 

Hukamee hukam hukmI hukmu

chalaai raah. clwey rwhu]

Naanak vigsai vaiparvah.3 nwnk ivgsY vyprvwhu]3]

The commander of the command makes the world move on. Thy is cheerful and carefree, O Naanak.3

Saacha sahib saach naai swcw swihbu swcu nwie

bhaakhia bhaao apaar. BwiKAw Bwau Apwru]

The Lord and Thy command are everlasting; love is the speech of the Lord infinite.

 

Aakhaih mangaih AwKih mMgih

daih daih dyih dyih

daat karai daataar. dwiq kry dwqwru]

The people repeatedly appeal for gifts and Thy fulfills.

 

Phair kai agai rakheeai Pyir ik AgY rKIAY

jit disai darbaar. ijqu idsY drbwru]

Therefore, what to offer to witness Thy divine court?

 

Muhow kai bolanh boleea muhO ik bolxu bolIAY

jitsun dhare piar. ijqu suix Dry ipAwru]

So, what words to speak to excite Thy attachment?

 

Amrit vela sach naao, AMimRq vylw scu nwau

vadiaee veechaar. vifAweI vIcwru]

Glorify and meditate on Thy name in this life.

 

Karmee aavai kapra krmI AwvY kpVw

nadree mokh duaar. ndrI moKu duAwru]

This way, one gets a robe of glory and a gate of salvation.

 

Naanak avai ajanhiai, nwnk eyvY jwxIAY

sabha aapai sachiaar.4 sBu Awpy sicAwru]4]

O Naanak, one realizes in this style; the wonderful Lord exhibits everywhere.4

Thapia na jaai QwipAw n jwie

keeta na hoai. kIqw n hoie]

To establish and create the Creator is not imaginable.

 

Aapai aap niranjan soai. Awpy Awip inrMjnu soie]

Thy is self-existent and absolute.

 

Jin saivia. ijin syivAw

tin paaia maan. iqin pwieAw mwnu]

Whoever meditates on Thy name gets honor.

 

Naanak gaaveeai nwnk gwvIAY

gunhee nidhaan. guxI inDwnu]

O Naanak, sing in the praise of the Lord—the treasure of goodness.

 

Gaaveeai sunheeai gwvIAY suxIAY

man rakheeai bhao. min rKIAY Bwau]

Sing, listen, and love Lord at heart.

 

Šukh parhar duKu prhir

sukh ghar lai jaai. suKu Gir lY jwie]

The pain relieves, and one feels pleasure in the home of the self.

 

Gurmukh naadan gurmuiK nwdM

gurmukh vaidan gurmuiK vydM

gurmukh rahia samaaee. gurmuiK rihAw smweI]

The guru is a source of Thy name, and spring of divine knowledge; with the grace of the guru one knows that Thy is all pervasive.

 

Gur Eesar guru eIsru

gur gorakh Barma guru gorK brmw

gur Paarbatee maaee. guru pwrbqI mweI]

The guru for a Sikh is a Shiva, a Vishnu and a Brahma, and a Parbati Maaee - wife of Shiva.

 

Jai hau jaanha jy hau jwxw

aakaha nahee AwKw nwhI

kahnha kathan na jaaee. khxw kQnu nw jweI]

Even if I know Thy command, I can not describe it; the words can not describe Lord.

 

Gura ik daih bujhaaee. guurw iek dyih buJweI]

O guru make one article evident to me.

Sabhana jeea ka ik daata, sBnw jIAw kw ieku dwqw

so mai visar na jaaee.5 so mYY ivsir n jweI]5]

There is only one Giver of all the creation, may I not forget Lord.5
