Late Prof. Naranjan Singh Sahota Honored

Amrik Singh Kang

On June 24, 2000 hundreds of people including family members, relatives, friends, well wishers and literary people gathered in Sahota home in the city of Renton, USA.  People came all the way from California and British Columbia to attend this function.  Amritpal Sahota had to add temporary extension to his home to accommodate this large gathering.   It was exactly eleven months on that day when Prof. Sahota passed away.  He is survived by his wife Kulwant Kaur Sahota and two sons Amritpal Singh Sahota and Kanwaljit Singh Sahota and five grandchildren.  He served as the Vice President of Punjabi Sahit Sabha ( Punjabi Literary Society ) of Seattle for two years.  At this occasion three of his newly published books of Punjabi poetry were released and he was honored posthumously by Punjabi Sahit Sabha.  A plaque in his name was accepted by his wife Mrs. Kulwant Kaur Sahota.

At this occasion, Nadim Parmar the editor of the Gazal Magazine in B.C. Canada was the chief guest.  Mr. Parmar was also honored for his service to advance the cause of Punjabi literature.  He too was awarded a plaque by Punjabi Sahit Sabha Seattle.  His gazals have been sung by Chitra Singh-Jagjit Singh.  People listened to Nadim Parmar's poetry with great enthusiasm.

All the members of Punjabi Sahit Sabha except the president Mrs. Sawraj Kaur attended this function.  Mrs. Sawraj Kaur who lives 150 miles away in Vancouver, WA could not attend due to illness.  However she wrote a very good review of Prof. Sahota's life and literature and faxed it to me that I read out to the gathering on her behalf.  The other members of the Society who wrote and read papers on Prof. Sahota's life and literature included Harbhajan Singh Bains and myself.  The members who read their poems and songs included Avtar Singh Adampuri who is the General Secretary & Treasurer of the Society, Paramjit Singh Raju, Major Singh Cheemna, Dr. Jasbir Kaur and Shinderpal Singh Aujla.  Shinderpal Singh Aujla sung his famous song especially written to pay homage to our departed poet friend and elder.  Whenever Shinderpal sings that special and very moving song written especially for Prof. Sahota, people ( myself included ) can not control their emotions.
